I’m currently in sunny (not) Atlanta, Georgia ”“ where it’s a balmy 41 degrees ”“ at the RE Tech South Conference.
This is the fourth incarnation of RE Tech South, but the first one that I’ve been able to attend. It will not be the last. The conference is very well organized, with great speakers and topics ”“ and absolutely minimal “vendor pitching”.
Today I will present “Website Conversion Optimization”. Here’s the session description:
There is a wealth of information out there about Search Engine Optimization. Books, blogs, entire conferences are dedicated to SEO. There is little to nothing out there about how to optimize your sites conversions — changing visitors to clients. In this presentation we will review, learn and discuss tools and techniques that can help you do just that — convert visitors to prospects and clients.
And here is the presentation:
This was converted from Keynote, which if you’re a PC person you may not have heard of. It’s for the Mac. I built it entirely on my iPad. Wicked cool presentation software, but the transitions get lost and a couple of blank sides get included in the SlideShare conversion.
Here is the PDF version if you’re so inclined to download it. You can also view or download it on SlideShare.
UPDATE: Thanks to Thomas Cunningham (and his trusty iPhone) for recording his live stream of my presentation. You can see it here (in four parts due to some connectivity issues).
Wish that I could be sitting in the room listening to this presentation. Hopefully we will cross paths when you are up on a stage sharing your experience (some day).
The amount of analytical geekiness that you bring to the table is great, plus you can translate it as an active real estate broker. Most of the tech folks out there aren’t on the ground-floor dealing with consumers and agents like you, which gives your insights much more value to us (agent bloggers).
Thanks for continuing to be a pioneer, solid team player, and leader in the real estate blogging world.
Whoa!! I love the Heat Maps thing. I’m going to check that out. I’m going to check the other stuff out too, but the heat maps is really neat.
One of the most overlooked optimization tips for Real Estate related sites (and for the matter just about any site) is form length. It is general knowledge that each field on your registration form reduces potential conversions (registrations) by approximately 20%. Not asking questions like, “are you working with a Realtor?”, “time frame to purchase?”, etc. on website forms can and will increase the amount of leads (conversions) a website receives.
Ask only for a visitors basic contact information and see your conversions increase.

Great meeting you today. Enjoyed our conversation as well as your presentation.
I have to say nice presentation Jay, You did mention clicktale. Now I think one of the most under used features of clicktale is visitor movies. You can literally watch every move that a visitor made while on your site. If you can sit down and view all the movies you can analyze patterns of what visitors do and make improvements to your site according to them
I also believe VWO is a great software, I do believe that they can do a bit better in tutorials but overall everyone should split test everything on their site from Call to Actions, button size/color to placement of forms, images, etc.
I had no idea such a thing was possible. Watching your user’s every movement on your site sounds downright diabolical. Can’t wait to try it out for myself!
I was honored to watch you build it. I just wish I could have seen you present in person. Next time Jay!
Jay, You and your presentation were a solid 10 today.
I am so bummed that I did not go to #retso. Thanks for sharing with us though!
This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality resource for free. It?s the old what goes around comes around routine.
I wish I could have attended #retso this year too, but I had clients coming in from overseas so I have a good excuse!
Great stuff *as always* Jay.
Love “Keynote” easy to use and with iPad you can make a presentation anywhere!
I with I could have been there, but I did watch some of the RETSO via live streaming. Unfortunately, I didn’t see your presentation…bummer.
Very cool. I was a user and fan of ClickTale, but several of these tools are new to me. Thanks for posting this Jay. Great stuff.
You left too soon, 78 and sunny today in Atlanta! Anyway, good info. Digging the VWO, thanks!
For those following along (that weren’t fortunate enough to be at RETSO), I’ve linked a recording of the live stream at the bottom of the post.
Speaking of RETSO, it was the best real estate conference I’ve attended. If you’re in the real estate space, you’d be well advised to attend next year!
Great presentation on Conversion Optimization, Keynote works wonders 🙂
It’s amazing how simple things like changing button color contrast or moving the search bar to the top of the sidebar will give you such huge increases in CTR. Good stuff, Jay.
Jay, seriously, your presentation alone was worth the ticket price to RETSO. It was awesome to meet you and I hope we can stay in touch.
Stephanie – that’s got to be well into the “Top Five Compliments I’ve Ever Received” list. Thanks! Awesome to meet you too!
Great conversion optimization presentation jay. I Learned a lot thank you!
