The blogtastic Mary McKnight posted on Active Rain about “getting memed“. As with all of Mary’s AR posts, it generated a lot of interest. So I set up the first (?) Active Rain meme. It’s the same “5 things you don’t know about me” meme that’s spreading like a bad cold.
What’s a “meme”? To quote Mary:
I was memed this morning by my friend and competitor, Paul Chaney of Blogging Systems. For those of you that don’t know what a meme is: It’s a thought stream carried from one person to another, or, to be more precise, a “unit of cultural information transferable from one mind to the other,” so says Wikipedia. Basically, it’s the blogging equivalent of a chain letter. The cool thing about blogging is that the meme can be tracked. Entire websites are devoted to doing just that. Some memes, however, are deliberate”¦sort of a social game to build community and engender relationships. (My emphasis)
My good cyber-pal Maureen Francis proceeded to tag me (Check Mo’s blog out if you haven’t. It rocks, shiny new theme and all)
So here you have five things about me that you probably didn’t know:
- I’ve jumped out of a perfectly good airplane 12 times. (I *highly* recommend it!)
- I taught my son to play Chess when he was three. By the time he was five, I couldn’t beat him. I have two chess trophies. My son has over 100, including state and national level championships.
- My 13 year old daughter plays piano, clarinet and flute. She doesn’t know it, but she’s getting a saxophone for Christmas. I can’t even play a kazoo.
- I had a 4.0 GPA in college.
- My Point 2 Agent web site is ranked #1 in the world out of 103,000+ Point 2 sites (at least for the moment)
If you’d like to see some of the ActiveRainer’s meme’s please visit this post. And if you haven’t joined the Active Rain network, what are you waiting for? It’s one of my favorite places to hang out. There’s a wealth of info to be had, some good amazing people to meet, world class bloggers, and more…

Holy mackerel! That's impressive stuff!
I'm so glad this meme thing took off. Now I have all the dirt on real estate bloggers. Jay, you are an amazing person and I'll be sending my son to you in about a year for his chess lessons. Feel free to return him when he hits 18.
Thanks John. I can't take credit for the kids stuff, they take after their mother.
Mary, my kids are 13 and 15 and deep in the throes of teenagerism. I can't handle another one! But I do strongly encourage kids to learn to play chess. It's great for their brains and *really* helps them learn problem solving skills. Some of the kids are amazing players. There is nothing quit as humbling as getting crushed in an intellectual game by a six year old. James doesn't play competitively any more (it's not "cool"), but he still enjoys trouncing his father every now and then.
Jay,
I have been a visitor to your site before but Im http://www.activerain.com blog touring today.
Excellent, Maureen Memed me too! I have no idea what I am going to write! Its a great idea…even if it isnt exactly my real impression of what a Meme actually is.
I've always wanted to try sky diving…maybe one day I'll actually do it.

Jay – looks like we have some things in common. I've jumped out of a perfectly good airplane 62 times. I have a daughter who will turn 13 in a month. I had a 4.0 in college – for one semester! My Point2 website ranks #1 in Google (for one term…)!
Josh – just do it!
Sam – and I lived in Austin for 20 years and call Austin home. And you're the AustinRealEstateGuy.com…. Hmmmm….
Good luck with the 13 year old daughter thing.
No wonder we look at the world similarly… our sons retire about the same age (mine is now into piano and music) … and both are good blitz players. One reason my son tapered off was because he couldn't sit still for those longer games… as he grew older, others who could sit still would start to outcalculate him. Some day look forward to meeting up with you Jay…
Jay the Chess Dad! My son also played the “circuit” and we were attending two nationals per year between 2003-05, and calling them vacations (they all seemed to be on the East Coast or Nashville)… look us up in the USCF database… he’s already semi-retired pursuing other interests, all before hitting his teens!
Pat the Chess Dad! Looks like we were both in Nashville for the 2003 National Elementary Championships! Your son was in the K-3 section, my son was in 4th grade at the time, playing in the K – 6. He was pretty much done by the 6th grade. The last national he played in was the Jr High’s in Tucson in 2004 (as a 6th grader). Looks like mine “semi-retired” a year or two before yours did. My son was *really* into blitz, a game I could never play well. He was actually a better blitz player than he was with normal time controls.
I was a TD in the 2003 Elem Nationals in your son’s section. Who knows, I may well have have had to resolve a “HE TOUCHED THAT PIECE!” claim for your little guy.
Small world, isn’t it?
